Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), also known as beniseed and sim-sim is one of the world's oldest oilseeds known to human race. No record can be traced regarding the original home of sesame. Evidences however indicate Ethiopia as the center of origin of cultivated sesame (Maiti et al. 1988). In days of Cleopatra, the consumption of sesame seeds by Greek soldiers was considered to give them energy and strength to carry out their arduous work. World production of sesame seeds is estimated at 2.25 million tonnes, of which 70% is consumed in the producing countries itself. Annual trading volumes are estimated at 600,000 MT, valued at US0 million. India, China, Myanmar in Asia, Sudan, Nigeria, and Ethiopia and Tanzania in Africa and Guatemala in Central America are the major producing and exporting countries with Japan the world's largest importer Nigerian natural sesame seed is very well known for its high oil content and that is it has gained a widespread reputation among the oil mills industry. It is also suitable for confectionery and biscuit industry. Hulled sesame seed use is widespread in the bakeries. Sesame seed is also a major ingredient in the Middle Eastern products in the manufacture of tahini (sesame paste) and halva (sesame paste mixed with sugar).
